為了帶給股東更多的投資價值，商業模式的創新對既有的保險業者來說是迫在眉睫。整個產業已經朝向新型態的商業模式演進，好比以數據分析即服務 Analytics-as-a-service (AaaS) 為基礎的財富管理，或是以平台與生態系為基礎的合作模式。對保險業者來說，速度是極其重要的，保險業者必須轉換過往領導組織的方式，從嚴謹有序的步調，轉成可以較快速地去建置新的商業模式。 如何運用既有的核心資源與規模，結合新創的速度？有 6 大要素可以加速建置新的商業模式： Strong commitment from senior management. 公司高層強而有力且清楚明確的支持。由於新的事業所需要的專業和能力，不一定是既有公司所擁有的，因此公司的高層與管理階層，需要投入大量的心力，來支持新的事業開展，並把其納入公司策略中，配置資源和人力去進行。 Obsession with value over ideas. 渴求價值，勝於點子。好的新事業，不是去追求那些看似很吸睛的點子，而是要專注在這個新事業，是否可以利用既有的優勢（包含資料、人才、通路、品牌等等）來創造更多的價值。成功案例包含：運用 AI 技術提供優異的核保和理賠流程、以 AaaS 平台為基礎的產品服務、分攤風險的 P2P 保險等。

現今消費者期待更好的數位體驗與個人化的保險商品，加上疫情的影響，有越來越多的需求是希望藉由數位接觸點來進行交易，取代實體的方式。 根據 2019 年 World Insurance Report (WIR) 研究報告指出，有三種主要的生意模式 “Usage-Based Insurance”, “Insurance with Value-Adds” 以及 “Insurance as a Value-Add” 正快速發展以因應市場需求，而在 2020 年的 WIR 報告中亦指出，UBI 模式在市場上已成為主流。 在 WIR 2020 報告中，提出了保險業三大主要趨勢： Almost everyone is digital now 因為社會行為與消費偏好的改變，有 62% 千禧世代與 64% X 世代都偏好使用線上與手機應用服務。 The new trust equation 超過 36% 的消費者願意從大型科技公司或平台(BigTechs)、保險科技公司(InsurTechs)，或是產品製造商 (Product Manufacturers) 直接購買保險，而非透過傳統保險公司。

The best way to create innovative products is to build innovation into the way an organization functions. 開發創新商品的最好方式，就是將”創新”融合在組織運作的機制中。 管顧公司麥肯錫於<Product innovation: The new imperative for insurers in Asia>文章中，建議亞洲的保險業者需要透過了解消費者的需求來開發創新商品，而非採用傳統的風險分析方式或回應競爭對手的產品。有效的產品創新需要深度了解消費者情緒與實際需求，並且有能力快速因應這些需求提供對應的商品。82% 保險業高階領導者認為產品開發是重要的核心優勢，但僅有 12% 認為公司已具備開發創新商品的能力。 而創新的保險產品在亞洲保險產業尤其重要，好比在一些主要市場如中國，約有 1/7 的人口屬於上有老、下有小的「三明治世代」，他們所承受的各種壓力和考量，包含退休與財富計畫、家庭安全、兒童教育等，都可能帶來跨世代的保險需求缺口。抑或如日本持續增加的高齡化人口，65 歲以上的人口佔總人口數 30% 以上，具備創新能力的保險業者即可推出對應的保險商品與服務。
